Aperiodic Industries has hosted dozens of workshops and collaborative building events. Below are some of them. Please join our mailing list to learn more about what we are up to.

LA Pergolas Paint Party

For two days we used laser cut rubber templates from the spangle workshops and paints with various zinc content to develop a sort of dazzle camouflage for the galvanized surface of the LA Pergolas structures.  The goal was to establish a method for integrating graffiti, manufacturing defects and weathering into a constantly evolving crystalline surface treatment.  The appearance is inspired by a magnified fractal impression of the natural crystal structure of electrically excited zinc used to protect steel in most infrastructural steel like sign posts on the side of the freeway.

Diamonds are forever

Join us for an evening of diamond cubic face centered structural systems.  We will engineer a space frame system that appears to function like the crystalline lattice of a diamond.  We will look at tetrahedral vs octahedral truss configurations and optimize them for maximum structural flexibility in grasshopper.  We will weight that against fabricability and durability.  And of course, good looks.  This will departure from the research done for the Parametric Peppervine.  Please join us to help us explore these subjects and perhaps find inspirations for your own work as well.

Conceptually Picturesque

An evening long architectural concept rendering workshop in the third week of March.  We will use grasshopper to generate some simple utopian structures, match geometry and render them in rhino and then use stock images from the internet to composite them into a beautiful and stylish rendering.  The idea comes from three converging issues at Aperiodic Industries:

1. concept images are increasingly the lingua franca of these times, the tools to build anything exist, but the time, money and feasibility is not yet there.  These images give a preview, a roadmap and an aspiration thrill to these emerging possibilities.  We will discuss the trends of rendering and their eventual revelations in the physical world.
2. Aperiodic Industries would like to start an archive of futuristic conceptual architecture for the purposes of infusing these into society and tracking their changes over time, come to the workshop to create your contribution.  If you can operate rhino and photoshop you can do this!
3. because we all have ideas and the general skills to produce this work the biggest stumbling block is capturing that style, that look and that perspective that really communicates an idea.  We will have a tutorial on the process of creating an effective architectural concept image.
Ultimately this will be an evening of eating and drinking and experimenting to share ideas and fantasies about the future and how to communicate them.  We hope you might be interested in participating.

That’s a Moire

Join us Tuesday night 6pm-9pm for an examination of Moire Patterns.  Oliver is interested in how they apply to perforated metal screens for a project he is researching and will lead a workshop on his research and process using grasshopper and the laser cutter to create different visual phenomena in an attempt to find a language for storytelling.  All are welcome as we iterate through results from various simple manipulations of interference patterns both simulated and real.  It’s a surprisingly rich field for exploration and we hope you can join us for this illusory evening.

Spangle 2

Spangle Time 2

Friday February 13th 5pm-8pm

In order to make steel last, you need to coat it with something, and one of the longest lasting most efficient coating is galvanization.  I like the look of the crystals.  They remind me of the chemical origins of our world, beyond our perception but occasionally growing large enough and simply enough that it is like a microscope revealing the world around us at another scale.

The goal of the workshop will be to explore the geometric design space around spangles –  the crystal growth of zinc on steel –  to create a pattern to use as masks when (cold) spraying zinc directly onto steel.  Think parametric laser cut graffiti stencils.

The work will culminate in a stenciling strategy for a public sculpture project Oliver is working on. These events are free to attend, simply bring a laptop with your favorite vector rendering program and probably rhino and grasshopper, fill out the safety wavier (which also signs you up on our workshop at aperiodic website) and rsvp by email.

Cucumbers Are Fruits Too

Cucumbers are fruits too!

tuesday 10/29 6pm – 8pm.

Please join us tuesday night to make a holiday gift for yourself and the Fallen Fruit pop’up store as part of the Hammer “art saves LA.” We have designed a cucumber waffle wood puzzle concept that allows you to come by, model a cucumber, laser cut it, and a box. We only ask that if you make one, make one more we can sell at the Fruitique. Proceeds from this symposium will benefit the Aperiodic libations fund. Because symposium literally means “to drink together.” Cucumber flavored drinks to be served, unless too cold in which case we will have hot toddys.
This event is free. You must RSVP by emailing
